Why Are My Teeth Stained?

If your teeth have become discolored, it is important to determine the cause. There are two types of staining that can compromise your smile.

  • Extrinsic stains affect the tooth's outer layer, or enamel. Enamel is a translucent material that reflects light and appears glossy. A naturally porous material, enamel can darken after staining agents leave deposits. Red wine, soft drinks, dark berries, soy sauce, and tobacco contribute to extrinsic staining.
  • Intrinsic stains occur in the inner structure, or dentin, of the teeth. Dentin is also porous, and protects the inner cavity of the tooth. It is rarely discolored by staining agents unless the protective enamel has been destroyed. Excessive fluoride exposure during childhood, antibiotics, internal bleeding or tissue damage within a tooth, and certain medical conditions may result in intrinsic staining. These stains cannot be treated with teeth whitening. Veneers are typically recommended for those wishing to conceal intrinsic stains.

A few simple steps can prevent stains from accumulating. In addition to maintaining a strict oral hygiene routine, we encourage our patients to reduce their intake of dark-colored foods and drinks, and to quit using tobacco. Brushing, flossing, and at the least, rinsing, after each meal can keep your teeth bright and healthy looking. During regular cleanings, Dr. Ramirez can also target hard-to-reach spots, and eradicate plaque and other buildup that can contribute to staining.

What Are My Options?

Our practice offers in-office and take-home teeth whitening options to enhance our patients' smiles. Our in-office Deep Bleaching can whiten teeth several shades in under 90 minutes. After the gums are covered with a protective material, Dr. Ramirez applies a peroxide gel to the teeth. This specialized gel is activated with a dental lamp, penetrating the enamel and dentin pores to break down tooth-staining deposits. For patients with severe stains, we may suggest a follow-up take-home bleaching kit to complement in-office whitening.

Patients may experience a slight increase in sensitivity for a short time after bleaching. For our patients who are prone to sensitivity, we may recommend Philips Zoom!™ DayWhite and NiteWhite take-home whitening kits. Our take-home kits use a gel that contains amorphous calcium phosphate to protect enamel and reduce sensitivity. Whitening at home involves customized whitening trays made to closely fit your teeth. Results consistent with in-office bleaching can be achieved with regular use within one to two weeks.
