Have you ever heard of endodontics? Endodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses primarily on your pulp within your teeth. The pulp is the life force of a tooth, as it contains nerve endings, connective tissues, and blood vessels. However, if the pulp is damaged, it must be removed or the tooth will eventually fail and die. Endodontic treatment offers root canals to extract the pulp and save the tooth.

Typically, pulp damage arises from damage to the tooth enamel. This includes damage from harmful acids or ingredients that can eat through your enamel. If your enamel has been completely eaten through, a hole will form known as a cavity. If left untreated, bacteria can seep into a cavity and damaged a tooth’s pulp.

Pulp damage can also arise due to blunt trauma and serious oral accidents and injuries to your teeth and gums. If you have sustained a heavy blow to your facial area, make sure to have your smile inspected to check if any teeth have been cracked or split. In some cases, your tooth enamel may be exposed and damaged, but the injury will not be visible. Bacteria will still be able to enter the tooth and damage your pulp. If for any reason your pulp has become damaged, rather than seeking out a tooth extraction, come see us for a root canal therapy.
